2014. Dance performance, 30‘
Periferia, a dance company based in Cartagena de Indias, was founded in 2010 by dancer and choreographer Lobadys Pérez, an artist who became interested in the experimental crossover genre Hip Hop and contemporary dance. While working for ten years with the internationally recognized company El Colegio del Cuerpo, directed by Álvaro Restrepo and Marie France Deliuvin, he graduated in dance education from the Universidad de Antioquia and is currently pursuing a Masters in Development and Culture in the Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar. Through his work with children and young people in deprived areas of Colombia and Panama peripheries, he has developed a system for dance as a social and pedagogical strategy.
The idea of center and periphery, widely discussed by social science, serves as a backdrop to Cartagena youth involved with urban dance, is the impetus for an interdisciplinary space, dialogue, creation and production of thought. This piece, Más allá de la piedra (Beyond the Stone) is a site-specific adaptation of Insubordination, made for #1 Cartagena. The piece consists of an intervention that speaks to the strength of abstract and poetic form through dance. Cartagena is a city of extreme opposites, of poverty and affluence as a result of political and economic dynamics with clear colonial, historical roots, currently made more complex by phenomena such as globalization and the pattern of expansion of global capitalism. Using a nonviolent but aggressive movement called “krumping,” born from Hip Hop, the piece is repositioning the value of the alienated individual in our society. This intervention is a cry against those economic, commercial, and technical ideas and a reminder of the day-to-day realities of the majority of Cartagena’s residents.
